Check another classic NC #BBQ joint off my list! The legendary Morris Barbecue in Hookerton. They’re only open on Saturdays and close once they sell out. Stopped at 11:30am and they were out of ribs (FYI - you have to preorder during the week to secure them).
The only fault I can find with this sandwich is maybe the fact that I wanted another one. Like really, really wanted another one. They really should advertise that folks will NEED at least two sandwiches. The girl at the take-out window should have said something like: "You know you're gonna want a second one, so go ahead and get one."
The 'cue is perfectly chopped, smokey, and tender with an excellent heat signature from the red pepper flakes. Vinegar was balanced and not overpowering at all. Slaw was chopped fine like I love and had the sweetness I seek to go up against the vinegary heat. The traditional bun was fresh and held up against the slaw and vinegar.
Sarah asked for a rank out of 10 and said I could find no fault, so probably “10.” She said I didn’t grunt and have a “Gene Furr” foodie reaction, so it could not have been perfect. So I give it a 9.75 out of 10, for lack of a Gene Furr face and the fact I would have loved the ‘cue to be piled a little higher – and told I needed to buy a second one when I ordered.
Definitely well worth a short out-of-the-way drive while headed to the beach (on a Saturday... before they sell out).
